'Section 31' is 'Star Trek' at its most fun
by Rachel Leishman
Section 31 has hit Paramount+ and the film, which brings Michelle Yeoh back as Captain Philippa Georgiou is a fun reminder of how exciting Star Trek can be. The most fun episodes of the franchise always stick out as fan favorites and they often hold a soft spot for fans. What makes Section 31 perfect is that the film feels like an extended version of those kinds of episodes.
We get to see Georgiou in a new kind of role and while the Starfleet aspect of the series is completely tied to one Starfleet officer named Rachel (Kacey Rohl). But Section 31 itself is an intelligence and defense organization in the Star Trek universe. Its objective is to carry out covert operations for the Federation. So already, the film puts us in a new world for Trek fans.
But what made this so fun was watching as this team met each other, got close with one another, and became a unit who could work together and would succeed in what they were doing all together. Led by the incredible Georgiou.
Yes, we had those iconic moments with Yeoh where she was fighting and you end up mesmerized by her ability to carry out action sequences. But for me, the fun of Section 31 came from these new characters we met. Georgiou was our familiar character, Rachel was the connection to Starfleet as we knew it, and everyone else got to play a new role in Star Trek and it was fun to watch unfold!
But still, seeing Yeoh in Star Trek felt right. When she first was introduced in Star Trek: Discovery, it felt like perfect casting could and did happen. So having her thrive in a film like Section 31 is exciting not only as a Trek fan but as a fan of Michelle Yeoh! Philippa Georgiou is back and better than ever and we loved to see it!
